Cassie tossed back and forth in her bed. She had tried to sleep for the past hour, but her mind wouldn’t shut down. And no matter how she laid, or how much she fluffed up her pillows, or even how snuggled she got under her covers, nothing worked. She was tired, and she needed to sleep. But her body wouldn’t let her.

It was Anthony. The way he made her feel. The way he looked at her. The way they kissed hours before in her work’s breakroom. It kept playing over and over in her mind. Even now, her heart raced with excitement. Wanting more. Needing more.

Kicking her blankets off her, she sighed. What was she going to do?

In times past, she would get out her darts. The act of throwing a sharp object at something that could be punctured relaxed her. Maybe this would again relieve some pent-up tension and help her grow tired enough to pass out.

She grabbed what she needed for this hobby and set it up. In a pair of short shorts and a cami with lace covering pretty much the whole top of it, she took her usual stance, ready to strike. Eyeing the bullseye, she threw one dart. Not bad. She struck the outer rim of the target. The second dart twirled in her fingers. Breathing steadily, she thrust it forward. Closer. It was the third dart that was the charm, hitting the very center of the bullseye.

Cassie retrieved the three darts and stepped back. As she was getting ready to start all over again, her phone started to ring.

Who’s calling me this time of the night? she thought.

Her phone was on the nightstand. When she got there, the call had ended. She looked at who it was. Anthony! But what did he want? He knew she would probably be sleeping. Could something be wrong? Was he in trouble?

She quickly dialed him back. When he answered, his voice was tired and sad.

“Hey! Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m just tired, but I couldn’t sleep. I thought I’d call you. I thought maybe you’d still be up. I didn’t wake you, did I?”

“I’ve been trying to sleep myself but can’t. So, no, you didn’t wake me.”

“Oh, good.”

The two of them talked a while. An idea crossed Cassie’s mind, but she didn’t share it until she had thought it through. She decided to go for it, hoping it would only lead to good things and not be a mistake. “Hey, since we’re chatting, do you want to just come over?”

“You want me to come over?” Anthony asked.

Cassie felt stupid. She was moving way too fast. He wasn’t ready for this. “I’m sorry, am I –”

“No, no, I’d love to come over. You’re above The Peanut Shop, right?”

Butterflies circled in Cassie’s stomach. But instead of causing nerves, she was getting excited. “Yes!”

“Great. See you in a few.”

He hung up. Cassie laughed. They didn’t even say goodbye. Was he as eager to get to her as she was to get to him? She smiled, thinking of what might happen.
